Southwest Mesa

A river winds through a Southwestern landscape beneath a wide sky. Ochre and earthy red hold the land, while transparent blue opens the space above it. The scene grew as I painted, each stroke helping me find the next.

I made the original in egg tempera, slowly layering hand-mixed pigment on a clay panel. Some passages remain transparent; others become more opaque as the color gathers. That balance of intention and discovery is part of what draws me to the medium. The fine-art reproduction preserves the painting’s delicate grain and shifts in color.
