Morning Fog Off Sugarloaf Island

Morning fog lifts over the winding water off Sugarloaf Island on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. Small boats rest along the channel, while low trees and shoreline lead the eye into the distance. I left much of the sky open so the quiet light of a new day could settle over the scene.

I built the painting in translucent layers of egg tempera, carrying soft ivory, cerulean blue, olive green, and ochre across the water and land. In the foreground, the marks become more textured where water and shore seem to meet and change places.
