Chincoteague Ponies in Sunset

Two Chincoteague ponies stand close in the island grasses, their bodies nearly touching as pale evening light moves across the water and sky. I remember them as a mother and her young—a fleeting moment of closeness held within the open coastal landscape.

I built the painting in thin, translucent layers of egg tempera, allowing the color and fine pigment to gather gradually. I wanted to preserve the ponies’ gentle presence without smoothing away the movement and texture of the scene.
